This is a black painting in which the barely perceptible figure of an obese person, wearing a sequined bikini, emerges, almost disappearing into the surrounding darkness, like a play of shadows. They are on the beach; the waves are sketched delicately, and at their feet, a float suggests a desire to have fun. The figure could be a man, a woman, or a child; at its core, it is simply a person.
This portrait represents those who do not fit “body standards,” who do not follow norms of appearance, gender, taste, or opinion — and who are often unrecognised and unseen. People who rarely appear in spaces of enjoyment — such as beaches — where society dictates which bodies may be visible. That is why the figure is barely visible. We prefer not to see, not to accept.
Black, usually a symbol of absence or emptiness, here transforms. It fills the space and asserts presence, because when these people appear — on beaches, in streets, in homes — they actually fill every space. The gazes of others point at them, judge them, and thus their presence becomes impossible to ignore.
